Planning Granted.
Citrus along with joint venture partners acquired Prince Bishops Place Shopping Centre in 2022 with an overarching view to redevelop this city centre shopping quarter into a revitalised mixed use destination.
The proposed regeneration of the centre comprises a part demolition and rebuild of the centre to create 30 flexible commercial units across 45,000 sq ft, creation of a new Public Square facing south onto the River Wear with views of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Durham Castle & Cathedral, whilst also creating a new city centre Hotel overlooking the historic market place and 408 bed student accommodation scheme on the upper floors.
The proposed scheme underwent a full public consultation throughout summer 2023 and plans were submitted to Durham County Council in March 2024. On 3rd July 2024 the proposal was granted permission at Planning Committee.
Whilst nothing will happen in the near future, Citrus and its partners will now plan for progressing the redevelopment and discussing with stakeholders to bring the scheme to fruition.
